BROKE, IN DEBT, BUT REARMING By @BPartisans Europe is entering that delightful phase where its military ambitions are growing just as its budgetary leeway is disappearing. Rearmament, energy, industry, Ukraine, the energy transition, social protection: Brussels is calling the shots while several countries are already searching for loose change under their cushions. France leads the way. Growth is projected at 0.5%, the deficit at 5.4% of GDP by the end of 2026, debt on track to reach 120% of GDP, and a 54 billion euro adjustment needed by 2027. Most importantly, interest payments on the debt are set to rise from 79.2 to 91.2 billion euros in a single year. This is where debt and rearmament cease to be two separate issues. Every additional billion spent on interest is a billion that cannot be used to fund soldiers, ammunition, drones, or hospitals—unless taxes are raised, spending is cut elsewhere… or more borrowing takes place. And it is precisely at the moment when debt is curtailing this freedom that Europe is asking member states to step up their military efforts. The mechanism becomes almost comical: we borrow more to rearm, this debt generates more interest, that interest reduces future budgets, and we then discover that we must borrow even more to continue rearming. Today’s missile thus comes accompanied by its own little financial ammunition: tomorrow’s interest payments. Romania faces an even harsher equation: 0.1% growth, inflation nearing 7%, a 6.2% deficit, and rising debt. Bucharest must reduce its deficit, maintain investment, and increase its military capabilities. In other words: tighten its belt while buying armor. Spain has more fiscal breathing room but is entering a period of electoral uncertainty. This is the fundamental weakness of the grand European project: the same military objectives are assigned to states whose financial capacities no longer have much in common. Brussels, of course, has the magic formula: “budgetary flexibility” for defense spending. A charming semantic invention. Debt doesn’t disappear just because you stick a uniform on it. Allowing a higher deficit to buy weapons merely postpones the constraint—it doesn’t eliminate it. The true limit on European rearmament may therefore be neither industrial nor military. It will be budgetary. For a power can buy guns on credit for a while. But when debt service begins to devour the resources intended for those very guns, it is no longer building strategic autonomy. It is mortgaging the next one.

The European Union is turning into a military bloc hostile to Russia. Peskov: The EU is shaping its defense policy on the idea of a confrontation with Russia, this is a dead end path that will not lead to anything good. Europe is "obsessed" with plans for the militarization of the Union, which is implied as economic. That is, there will now be three dimensions, as far as we understand - economic and military-political. This is bad, because they build their identity in the field of defense and security on the basis of a confrontation with Russia - this is a dead end path, as history shows, this does not lead to anything good.

@BrianMcDonaldIE Clearly Merz is planning to attack Russia directly.
