Predsednik Paragvaja v hišnem priporu: Odstavljen s položaja po propadu banke s tremi milijoni strank

Paragvajski predsednik Santiago Peña je odstavljen s položaja in aretiran po propadu digitalne banke Ueno – institucije, povezane z njegovimi nekdanjimi poslovnimi interesi –, kar je sprožilo finančno krizo in proteste po vsej državi.

V petek je 44 od 45 senatorjev, vključno s člani njegove lastne stranke, glasovalo za njegovo odstavitev. Predsednik senata Basilio Núñez je izjavil, da je bil Peña spoznan za krivega »malomarnega opravljanja dolžnosti«, poroča BBC.

Peñi je nato določen hišni pripor.

Senatorji so ga obtožili navzkrižja interesov, manipuliranja z regulativnim nadzorom, preusmerjanja pokojninskih skladov in prikrivanja nepravilnosti, povezanih s centralno banko.

Peña, ki je še lani imel v lasti delnice podjetja, v katerega lasti je bila banka, je zanikal kakršno koli krivdo.

Tožilka Silvia Margarita González Wester je sporočila, da bodo Peño danes zaslišali glede obtožb o zlorabi zaupanja, trgovanju z vplivom in zlorabi sredstev.

Njegov odvetnik Ricardo Preda je obtožbe zavrnil kot »nepremišljene, neodgovorne in oportunistične«.

UPDATE: PARAGUAY’S PRESIDENT RESIGNS IN DISGRACE AFTER “FRAUD OF THE CENTURY” (FYI, similar conditions exist in our countries…) Paraguay’s President, Santiago Peña, has been forced to resign in DISGRACE, after shocking details of his MANY connections to what’s being described as the "biggest FRAUD of the century” came to light. 1. Peña was a business partner of the conglomerate that owns Ueno Bank, the largest digital bank in Paraguay, until 2025… 2. Peña personally accepted two “highly irregular private loans” directly from Ueno Bank during his tenure. 3. Peña used his presidential platform to shield the bank from inspectors, aggressively dismissing financial warnings as "fear-mongering" to keep public money flowing into the fraudulent bank. 4. Shortly after becoming president, he appointed Ueno’s former chief executive to run the country’s central bank… Think about that. The person overseeing the bank previously ran the bank… The fox was literally guarding the henhouse (we have the same situation in the west..) And guess who is on the hook to bail them all out? The taxpayer… AND THATS NOT ALL 1. Under Peña, Ueno Bank started as a niche digital app and suddenly became the government's preferred bank. Funneling MASSIVE State Wealth into his friends pockets. 2. This included LOOTING PENSIONS by forcing ~$380M of workers' health and pension funds into Ueno. 3. While the government was pumping public money into Uneo, executives were quietly shoveling it out in the form of MASSIVE UNCOLLATERALISED “INSIDER LOANS” The taxes, life savings and pensions of citizens were used as a personal slush fund, with no assets left behind to cover the bad debts. By the time it collapsed, 25% of all the bank's deposits consisted of public funds…. Opposition lawmakers are FURIOUS, 8 bank executives have been arrested. 27 other bank officials and business associates face severe criminal charges. Don’t forget, this could happen ANYWHERE. Our banking and market systems are corrupt and stressed. My advice? Save in physical gold and silver.

Zaradi propada banke – ki jo je zaplenila centralna banka – je približno tri milijone državljanov, ki so imeli pri njej sredstva, izgubilo dostop do svojih prihrankov in pokojnin, kar je sprožilo val srditih protestov, zlasti v prestolnici Asunción.

Podpredsednik Pedro Alliana je zaprisegel kot začasni predsednik države in obljubil, da bodo državljani, ki jih je prizadel finančni zlom, v celoti poplačani.

Na tem položaju bo ostal do leta 2028.

Senator Rafael Filicola je razmere opisal kot največji korupcijski škandal v demokratični zgodovini Paragvaja.

V nagovoru narodu v četrtek je Peña izrazil obžalovanje in dejal, da »nikoli ni imel namena izigrati zaupanja državljanov«.
