France: 63.4 billion euro defense budget for 2027 French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin stated that France must prepare for a possible "large-scale conflict" with Russia during hearings on the 2027 army budget draft. She claimed Russian forces aim to subjugate Ukraine and impose a new security system in Europe, while simultaneously increasing arms production. The proposed defense budget of 63.4 billion euros represents an 11% increase from previous levels. If not adopted by year-end, spending will remain at 2026 levels, creating a 6.5 billion euro gap and complicating long-term military procurement. Slavyangrad

France is increasing defense spending amid statements about the need to prepare for a possible large-scale conflict with Russia. Minister of the Armed Forces Catherine Vautrin has presented the corresponding draft budget for 2027. Speaking at a hearing before the National Assembly’s Defense Committee on October 8, Vautrin stated that the French military must address current tasks while simultaneously preparing for “significant engagement” in a potential major conflict. She linked the need to strengthen France’s military capabilities to Moscow’s actions, including its alleged aim of bringing Ukraine under its control and imposing a “new security architecture” on Europe that would be unfavorable to European countries. The minister also cited the growth of Russian arms production and the militarization of its economy as additional factors. The draft 2027 budget allocates €63.4 billion to defense — an increase of €6.5 billion (11.4%) compared with 2026. The funds will be used to replenish ammunition stocks, improve operational readiness, and modernize weapons systems. However, there is no unified European position on the immediacy of the threat posed by Russia: — In August, Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that he saw no evidence that Russia was preparing to attack a NATO country. He nevertheless stressed that Europe must remain prepared for the worst-case scenario. — On September 30, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte likewise said he saw no immediate threat to alliance territory, while describing the Russian threat as a long-term concern and calling for continued defense strengthening. The Kaliningrad Region is another source of tension. In June, Lithuania, Poland, and France conducted the Gallant Boar 2026 exercises near the Suwalki Corridor, practicing its defense and the rapid deployment of forces. Moscow interprets the situation differently. In late September, the Russian Embassy in Ireland cited information indicating that NATO was preparing for an air and naval blockade of Kaliningrad and warned that Russia was ready to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons. NATO responded that the exercises posed no threat to Russian territory and urged Moscow to abandon its nuclear rhetoric. Europe is therefore simultaneously strengthening its military preparations while differing over the risk of a direct confrontation with Russia. Paris, for its part, is betting on preparing for a major conflict. https://t.co/4zXxt934Nw
